Making Waves for Trucks and SUVs – Ford Aluminum Body Panels

2015 Ford F-150

The 2015 Ford F-150, pictured here, was built with an aluminum body. Rumor has it that the new Ford Explorer and Ford Expedition will also have these aluminum body panels.

Ford shocked everyone when they announced that their 2015 Ford F-150 would be made with aluminum body panels. According to some industry insiders, Ford may be shocking the world again with introducing an aluminum body model for their Explorer and Expedition too.

On the Ford F-150, these aluminum body panels could help the 2015 truck weigh 700 pounds less than its current model year. This weight reduction could mean some serious savings in fuel economy, but Ford has yet to release the specific mpg.

If the next generation of Ford Expedition and Ford Explorers get a new aluminum body, then we can expect their fuel economy to improve as well. Especially on the Ford Expedition since the current 2014 models have a 5.4L V-8, and Ford already debuted the 2015 Ford Expedition with a 3.5L EcoBoost V-6 to further help with fuel efficiency.

While nothing has been confirmed about moving the Explorer and Expedition to a new aluminum body, we can expect a decision to be made in the next couple months.
