The all-new 2015 Ford F-150 that launches later this year at Brown Motors will make a heavy impact on the trucking world—or will it?
Thanks to its new body made largely of aluminum, the 2015 Ford F-150 weight has managed to shave off 635 pounds, which means the base half-ton truck will now be by far the lightest in the segment at a total of only 4,050 lbs.
In fact, the new F-150 isn’t just lighter than every other half-ton truck on the market. It’s also lighter than several midsize trucks and even lighter than a Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. Yes, you read that right—it weighs less than a sports car, which are almost always deathly obsessed with power-to-weight ratios.
The upsides of a lighter truck are clear: more of the engine’s considerable power is devoted toward towing or hauling cargo and less toward driving itself. And, fuel economy goes up. It’s a win-win!
