Vehicle versus pedestrian – that’s a fight we at Brown Motors don’t care to see. Not surprisingly, neither do the folks at Ford. So, they created the Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection technology, set to debut on the European 2015 Ford Mondeo.
The advanced safety technology uses a windshield-mounted radar sensor and camera to scan the area in front of the vehicle. When a pedestrian is detected, a warning alert is sounded in time for the driver to react and prevent a collision. If the driver does not respond, the vehicle will automatically apply the brakes to stop an accident from occurring or at least dull the impact.
While the Pedestrian Detection technology will only be available in Europe when the 2015 Mondeo is released later this year, Ford plans to expand the technology’s availability into other countries and Ford models.
“This technology adds to the already impressive list of driver-assist technologies Ford customers benefit from today,” said Raj Nair, group vice president of Ford’s Global Product Development.
Note: Pre-collision assist is now available on Ford vehicles in the United States.
